Welcome to Kenai, Alaska, an old Russian Community, located in south central Alaska on the western side of the Kenai Peninsula. This area is the home of the Kenai King Salmon and sports fishermen from around the world come to Kenai to test their skills on these world-class salmon. The King Salmon season starts May 1 and ends July 31, followed by the ever popular Red Salmon, which generally takes place sometime during the third week of June. As the Red Salmon run ends, the start of the Silver Salmon run begins, around July 20, and continues on through October. The Rainbow and Dolly Varden are abundant throughout the summer months. |

As you drive through the beautiful Kenai Peninsula, keep a watchful eye out for moose in the open meadows. They graze up to their bellies in water searching for many different types of vegetation. Along the highway you are apt to see a herd of Caribou as they migrate on the flats around the city of Kenai. You can always count on the Beluga Whales announcing the arrival of the salmon in Cook Inlet. They swim into the mouth of the Kenai River to feast upon the fresh salmon waiting to enter the river for their last journey. About this same time the Hooligan arrive (in the lower 48 they are known as "Smelt") and they can be dip-netted at the Kenai River bridge. |
